GREEN LIGHT GIVEN FOR YANGON’S NEW CITY OPENS UP ABUNDANT OPPORTUNITIES FOR MYANMAR’S BUILD, WATER & ENERGY INDUSTRY

Yangon’s long-stalled “new city” development project has been given the green light to move forward with a new development company, the New Yangon Development Co Ltd. (NYDC). Modeled after China’s Shenzhen and Malaysia’s Iskandar, the city upon completion is estimated to be twice the size of Singapore. Set to be built west of the Yangon River, the new city will open up abundant opportunities for Myanmar’s build, water and energy industry. Fully owned and managed by the Yangon Government, the company was introduced on March 31 by Yangon’s Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein.

Developed under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) system, the project will create more than two million jobs. The first phase of the new city covers five villages and townships, two bridges, 26-km long main roads, industrial zones, power plants, power distribution facilities and water and sewage treatment plants. The infrastructural development of New Yangon City’s Phase-1 is expected to cost over US$1.5 billion.

George Yeo, the former foreign minister of Singapore, who is also involved in the development of Yangon’s new city, has added on that “To ensure fair competition, transparency and capability, the NYDC will use the Swiss Challenge method, an international competitive bidding process for awarding a contract.”
